THE GLAD CAFE - SAFER SPACE POLICY OUR COMMITMENT
We commit to making our café bar and venue a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of background or identity. This commitment extends to all guests, artists, performers, promoters, volunteers, contractors and staff.
We at The Glad Café recognise that a Safer Space is something we create together as a community. We therefore expect that everyone treats each other with dignity and respect so that we may all enjoy the space and in return you can expect to be welcomed and treated in the same way. We encourage empathy and ask everyone to play their part in fostering a positive atmosphere where people feel able to be themselves.
We acknowledge that as a licensed premises, we have a responsibility to ensure that people can enjoy their nights out free from fear. We recognise that no space is perfect and therefore commit to listening, learning and responding appropriately when concerns are raised. We will regularly review our policies and practices in line with community feedback to help ensure our venue remains as welcoming and accessible as possible.
FULL HOUSE RULES
By entering our premise, you agree to: Respect everyone's boundaries and consent -- this is the first step in preventing sexual harassment and assault.
Respect everyone's pronouns -- let people be themselves and avoid making assumptions.
Respect everyone's time and space -- some people are here for music and socialising, but others are trying to work (this includes people reading, writing, or on their laptops as well as staff).
Respect everyone's chosen company -- whether you are here with friends, on a date, or by yourself with a book, you are welcome and entitled to enjoy the space as you wish, as long as you also respect others' choices. A person's presence in a public space is not itself an invitation to socialise. When in doubt -- ask!
Use inclusive language that welcomes people of all backgrounds, identities and experiences. In addition to using people's correct pronouns, this includes avoiding oppressive behaviour (i.e. racism, classism, sexism, queerphobia, xenophobia, etc.) A safe bet is to just mind your business and respect that everyone has their own story.
While on and leaving our licensed premises, make sure you and those you are with are comfortable and have a safe way home. Look out for one another. Check in with friends, offer support where appropriate, and keep an open dialogue with staff about any issues that arise. If consuming alcohol, check in with yourself and remember to drink water, which is freely available at the bar.
Understand that staff are here to facilitate a safe and fun environment to enjoy music, art, and community and conversation.
We are beholden to our own guidelines, and will make every effort to ensure all guests feel welcome. If you are asked to change a behaviour or leave the premises, you must respect that this is part of our job.
IF SOMETHING ISN’T RIGHT
If you are made to feel uncomfortable, or witness this happening to someone else, please report the incident to staff, who will quickly handle the situation in line with the above stated commitment. Working together helps to create an environment free from discrimination, bullying, hate speech, intimidation, harassment and assault.
All concerns will be taken seriously and treated with respect. All feedback is welcome.
We acknowledge that policies such as Ask For Angela don't always do enough -- instead of helping you leave, we will take the more equitable approach and, where appropriate, intervene, issue warnings, refuse service, or ask the individual making you uncomfortable to leave. Serious incidents may be reported to police.
Thank you for working with us to ensure The Glad Café is a safer space for our community.
