More commonly found in folk territory inhabited by Bert Jansch, John Martyn and the likes, Wrong Road Home (due for release on Holy Smokes Records October 2021) sees Robin Adams take a somewhat unexpected detour from his usual route. Drawing inspiration from some of his favourite songwriters, this record sees Adams channel his American songwriting heroes from the story telling of Hank Williams to the eerie atmospheres of Michael Hurley.
"Before I began this record, so much of the music I listened to seemed to struggle to find a place in what I do as a songwriter, beyond subtle lyrical influence. With this record, I just wanted to have fun channeling those great American songwriters. I wanted to explore storytelling, humor and slightly more playful arrangement."
The record is brimming over with a host of wonderful musicians, including Canada's ever rising folk duo Kacy and Clayton, who join Robin on several of the songs. With intricate stories, from tales of drunken woe to a delightful Americana take on Robert Burns' most famous ghost story, Tam O'Shanter, Wrong Road Home takes us on a winding path coloured with sonic scenery, paying clear homage to some of the great American songwriters of the 20th century. Yet somehow, that winding road never feels distant from Adams native pastures.
Robin Adams is a Glasgow based singer/songwriter. He has released 6 full length albums, spanning from 2009's Down to Reverie, to 2020's critically acclaimed, One Day. In 2016 he curated and released the charity compilation album Refugee, featuring new compositions contributed by luminaries such as Bonnie Prince Billy, Richard Dawson, Linda Thompson, Alasdair Roberts and Kathryn Joseph. Adams has won several songwriting awards including The Billy Kelly Songwriting Award and the Burns Song Award. Fans of Robin's music include Ralph McTell - 'If Robin had been on the circuit I was on back in the day, he would already be an underground guitar singer songwriter star!' - Ricky Ross - 'Robin Adams is the best kind of songwriter. He draws you into his music and once you're in you'll never want to leave.' More recently Adams has been selected by the Bert Jansch Foundation to contribute to Around The World In 80 Plays, performing alongside artists such as Johnny Marr and Richard Thompson to celebrate the music of Bert Jansch.
