“A very engaging piece with attractive melodies and strong solos.” Tony Dudley-Evans Home/Lands is a musical exploration of home and what it means to belong, led by multi-instrumentalist & composer Alicia Gardener-Trejo. With collaboration at the heart of the project, the band use the topography of familiar landscapes as catalysts for composition, take poems and short stories as writing prompts, and exchange musical stimulus in a pass-the-parcel approach.
Their music plays with the sonic possibilities of low woodwinds & double bass, experimenting with fresh ideas of melody/bassline responsibilities. With strong influences from the world of jazz and folk, Home/Lands features improvisations, game-pieces and intricately crafted melodies. Home/Lands’ self-titled debut album is due for release in Autumn 2025 ahead of a UK tour. Since receiving the B:Music Jazzlines Commission in 2022, the group were successful in an Arts Council England bid to fund 5 more cross-artform commissions, featuring new works from artists from the Midlands and the North of England. These works were created with inspiration from the stories and memories of local residents and community groups through a series of workshops, and featured Saxophonist/Clarinettist Faye MacCalman & Photographer Victoria Wai (Newcastle), Trumpeter Hugh Pascall & Spoken Word Artist Marcus Joseph (Beeston, Nottingham), Guitarist Anton Hunter & Poet Carl Burkitt (Hulme, Manchester), Saxophonist Emma Johnson & Leeds Animation Workshop (Leeds) & Cellist/Vocalist Laura Collins & Spoken Word Artist Jasmine Gardosi (Birmingham).
