Jazz at the Glad: George Burt & Cliona Cassidy // Diljeet Kaur Bhachu
Entry Requirements: Over 18s only
Diljeet Kaur Bhachu is a Glasgow-based musician. Working primarily with flutes, she also sometimes brings in spoken word and electronics. More recently, she has been re-exploring her relationship with singing through the North Indian classical tradition. Diljeet performs regularly with singer-songwriter Kapil Seshasayee and features on his albums A Sacred Bore and Laal. The soft, ambient, layered sounds of her solo work have been described as "Stunning, transporting to dream realms of music and restfulness…" (Bell Lungs). God is in the TV zine said of her last Glad Cafe appearance: “The flautist works with a loop pedal and sparing synthesiser to weave ethereal, almost extraterrestrial lullabies. Even the static from an errant cable sounds more like interference from a neighbouring planet. Bhachu layers sparse melodies until they become symphonies, building in directions no-one could predict, before stepping offstage as modestly as she entered.”
George Burt (guitar) and Clíona Cassidy (voice) are a partnership exploring the territory between songwriting, improvisation and performance. Inspired by nature and the environment, their practice features a range of material from fully-composed songs to pieces developed through improvisation and text. George and Cliona are members of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (“one of the best large improvising ensembles in the world” Jazz on 3), and combine their backgrounds in jazz, folk and opera to create a unique sound.
“Cassidy uses her voice in such an extraordinary manner it should be classed as a musical instrument, rather than a deliverer of lyrics. Burt is a superb improvising guitarist constantly changing mood and accent…. A brilliant combination…” (bebop spoken here)
