HOW SERENE & The Glad Cafe present:

Anjaana

Punjabi folk & Bhangra from Bradford

Anjaana were formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in the late 1970s by lead singer and bandleader Satpal Anjaana. They enjoyed bursts of fame through the 1980s, playing with legendary Panjabi Kali singer Kuldip Manak, releasing now heavily sought-after 12inch records with Wolverhampton’s Geet the Mega Band and helping establish Bhangra music in Britain. The band maintained a cult following throughout the subsequent decades, often playing everything from huge Mela festivals to impromptu open mic nights around West Yorkshire, including at Satpal’s own pub in Bradford, The Castle. It was here that the HOW SERENE crew saw Satpal play in 2022 (having heard many stories about the band over the years), and immediately invited Anjaana to play in Glasgow. Anjaana will bring a full band for the gig, which will cross into Bhangra, traditional Panjabi folk, dance songs and folk tales – for their first gig outside Yorkshire in many years.
