Kai Reesu is the spawn of 10 years of improvisational grooves - between Paul Copeland , Robbie McArthur and Matt Jim Sim. The rhythm section , formerly the bedrock of hip hop band CROOQ , are zany, electric, lofi and oftentimes melancholic , & together as a quintet - finished by the amazing Michael butcher and enigmatic Alex palmer - create material usually from reverse engineering improvised jams into songs . Inspired by the likes of Chris Dave , Nate Smith, D’Angelo , the roots , Robert glasper , erykah badu and the hometown hero corto.alto , Kai Reesu aims to wedge a path for a new type of sound on the Scottish jazz scene , a sound defined by soulful repetition and bombastic rhythm , with many a homage to the greats of hip hop , jazz and rock .
