Ka Baird is a performer, composer, and sound designer based in New York City. They are known for their live solo performances which include extended vocal, breath and microphone techniques combined with electronics and psychoacoustic interplay of flutes and other woodwinds. They create a present tense sound with a vigorous delivery that seeks extreme release through physical exertion and psychic extension that "dances" in the undefined margins of experimental sound, performance art, and humor."
They are one of the founding and continuing members of Spires That In The Sunset Rise founded in Chicago in 2001. Their debut solo album "Sapropelic Pycnic" was released through independent Chicago label Drag City in 2017. Their latest recording "Respires" was released through Brooklyn based imprint RVNG Intl in October 2019. Recent national and international engagements have included performances at the Unsound Festival (Krakow), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), MoMA PS1 (NYC), Issue Project Room (NYC), The Kitchen (NYC), The Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), TUSK Festival (Newcastle, UK), Incubate (Tilburg, Netherlands), KRAAK (Brussels, Belgium), Le Guess Who (Utrecht, Netherlands), and the Festival Of Endless Gratitude (Copenhagen,DK). They have done extended residencies at such institutions and collectives as Sonoscopia (Porto), Inkonst (Malmo), Experimental Sound Studio (Chicago), and Pioneer Works (Brooklyn). They were a 2020 recipient of the Foundation of Contemporary Art's Emergency Grant as well as a Jerome Foundation Artist-in-Residence at Roulette Intermedium in 2019.
Hexakaidecagon are the Ruby Slippers, Grand Ole Opry and The House on the Rock. They are a whirlwind survey of knocking in the night and rushing tides from handmade recycled LPs. Hexakaidecagon is a duo that shares band members with Benicio del Trainwreck, Ego Depletion, Dome Riders and Peeesseye. They are thrilled to welcome a situation in which possibilities overpower intentions.
The music of Bell Lungs can be described as alchemical, often starting a journey in one direction before transmogrifying into something else entirely by some unseen sleight of hand. Like turning the dial on a radio, there’s no knowing what sounds might be thrown up from the cacophonous jukebox of her mind which is just as likely to drop in a Ronan Keating cover as pay homage to Meredith Monk while delivering sets dripping with punch in the gut emotion. A prolific collector of instruments, she mostly plays minimalist strings, synths and tuned percussion, while trying to bend her voice in as many different directions as possible. She was writing songs about globe artichokes and fruit trees as Musician in Residence for Stranraer across summer 2022, has appeared at events as various as Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019, Supernormal 2019, Edinburgh Art Festival 2019, SONICA 2019 and Fort Process 2018, and, under the name "Levitating Tongues" recently soundtracked Rosalind Nashashibi and Lucy Skaer's film of sheep giving birth in an immersive improvised performance with Shiori Usui at Cooper Gallery in Dundee.
