“"I fell in love with them back in 1979 and I'm in love with them again now." - Billy Sloan, BBC Radio Scotland.
"Restricted Code keep it real in the best tradition of new wave. Beg, steal or borrow a ticket." - Graham19, gig feedback.
From Easterhouse in Glasgow, Restricted Code’s story began in the post-punk era. Signed to pop:aural records, they released and E.P. and two singles, as well as recording John Peel and other BBC sessions. The band toured widely, including supporting The Human League on a UK and European tour, and widely praised for both live performances and their recordings. Sounds Music Paper said they played “The Best Gig of 1981”, and Paul Morley in NME picked them as “band most likely to…”, in 1981.
In 2018 all of the original members got back together again. They play the best of the old music, with many of their most popular songs included in their live set, but Restricted Code is not a nostalgia band: the song-writing partnership of Cannavan & Quadrelli is as strong as ever, and a rich seam of creativity sees a flood of new songs too. The Glad Café gig will introduce their latest, self-funded recording, the four-track E.P., ‘I Got Lost’.
How to describe Restricted Code’s music? Well the video below will give a flavour, but as NME said “The twist-turn, pop-pulp/soul is a refreshing, fluid collision of the enigmatic, the familiar and the unclassified.”
