Roma / Irish cultural celebration in association with BEMIS Scotland through the Celtic Connections in the Community series
Triple bill line up featuring Roma groups Formatia Express & The Ando Glaso Collective & Irish group Rathú to celebrate the fantastic cultural legacy of these two prominent communities of the southside of Glasgow.
Formatia Express Led by Vali Ciuraru and his Daughter Beatrice Ciuraru, Formatia Express performs old style “lautar” music. Originally from the Moldova region of Romania, they are some of the most authentic representatives of this beautiful genre made popular by such groups as Taraf de Haidouks.
Ando Glaso Collective The group’s repertoire is based on authentic Gypsy music and incorporates each participant's own music heritage. As Roma communities remain largely isolated both from the mainstream societies and each other, the groups unique collaboration creates an exciting, high octane musical adventure that is just as exciting for the group as it is for their audience.
Rathú Rathú (Ra-who - Irish word for ‘settled) are a collaboration of musicians who are all celebrated exponents of Irish traditional culture having grown up in different places but all have settled in Glasgow as part of the diverse Irish cultural community in the city. The lineup features Glasgow's Roisin Anne Hughes on Fiddle, Oisin McCann from Warrenpoint Ireland on Pipes, Sarah Markey from Airdrie on Flute and Vocals, and Luc McNally from Sunderland on Guitar and Vocals.
