Intro to Ableton Live
Ableton Live is a digital audio workstation for macOS and Windows. In contrast to many other software sequencers, Ableton Live is designed to be an instrument for live performances as well as a tool for composing, recording, arranging, mixing, and mastering. A digital audio workstation and audio sequencer that, among its many functions, allows musicians to easily store and trigger samples during their shows so audiences can watch them build songs in real time; Ableton Live is a game-changing computer programme that has made it easier for the average person to make music and use their computer as an instrument, as well as perform live without needing to know how to program their own software. Gavin Thomson is a renowned live sound engineer, working for over a decade with acts such as The Pastels, Camera Obscura, Tracy-Ann & Danny, Rozi Plain, Francois & the Atlas Mountains and many more. He is also a talented musician and has played with Rozi Plain, Honey & the Herbs, Findo Gask and his own projects GRNR and RAZA have seen him deploy his expertise of Ableton Live as he controls samples as well as lights and visuals through the software. Gavin will lead this workshop, teaching the basics of the programme, beatmaking, inputting MIDI data, using MIDI to trigger samples and using a control surface.
