STORM THE PALACE
Storm the Palace are a baroque folk/pop band centred around singer-songwriter Sophie Dodds and multi-instrumentalist Reuben Taylor (also known for his work with James Yorkston and Meursault). Their music has been described by Clash Magazine as “taking its cues from modern classical, left field folk, and stubborn indie songcraft”.
They have toured in the US, the UK and Ireland, and recently completed a tour of the Scottish Highlands. They have had two releases to date – EP ‘In Ruins’ (2015) and LP ‘Snow, Stars and Public Transport’ (2017), both of which came out on Seattle’s Abandoned Love Records. The LP was described by Scotland on Sunday as “one of the best albums of the year” and by Folk Radio as “compellingly memorable songs, both challenging and inviting”.
This year they have recruited an eclectic new line-up, featuring Willa Bews on bass, backing vocals and occasional bag pipes, Jon Bews (Cantrip, Shooglenifty) on vocals and fiddle, and Alberto Bravo (Goodbye Blue Monday) on drums. They have been working on a new batch of songs, and are about to start recording their second album. This show will be the first airing of their new material.
Expect to hear Storm the Palace’s signature lush arrangements, but with added irreverence, weirder harmonies and more complicated time signatures, alongside lyrics that range from Jungian archetypes to Buffy the Vampire slayer.
A NEW INTERNATIONAL
The sounds of street music, carnival, music hall, cabaret, chanson, circus, movies, gypsy, folk + pop combine and create the sound of A New International. Tonight they'll be performing a special acoustic set with some new material!
