4tet DELIUS / STADHOUDERS / GOVAERT / DE JOODE started in December 2013, when the prestigious venue Bimhuis granted drummer Onno Govaert a Carte Blanche. For this, Onno invited Tobias Delius as a special guest for the already existing Trio Stadhouders / Govaert / De Joode, which started around 2010. This collaboration proved to be extremely fruitful, it felt like Delius had been part of the band forever.

This quartet brings together two generations of improvisers. Delius and De Joode both came onto the Amsterdam scene in the mid ‘80’s and have played together as a duo and part of other groups since then. Stadhouders and Govaert both grew up in Tilburg and share a longstanding musical history since their early teens, developing almost every aspect of their music making together over the years. They play in many bands together, of which the powerhouse called Cactus Truck is perhaps the best known. Upon moving to Amsterdam in the mid 2000’s, they quickly got inspired by and then involved in Amsterdam's improvised music community. One of the scene's major players is of course Wilbert de Joode, who has always shown great openness and support towards young newcomers. The three quickly took a liking to one another and the forming of a trio proved to be a rewarding step. When Delius was added for that concert in 2013, they all knew instantly that this quartet needed to keep playing and developing their shared language.
